As electric skateboards become more popular, there are finally starting to be options for different types. Most electric skateboards you’ll come across are longboards. As the electric motors, batteries, and other parts become smaller and more efficient, other styles of electric skateboards are becoming possible.
Penny Board is both a style of skateboard and the name of the Australian company that popularized them. They are pretty small, usually plastic skateboards. Penny Board, the company, doesn’t make their own electric skateboard (yet!). However, there are a few options out there if you are looking for an electric penny board. Not technically brand name “Penny Boards,” these electric skateboards are all similar size and design to a penny board. Here are some of the better options we’ve reviewed.
The Acton Blink Lite is our number one option if you are looking for an electric penny board. It isn’t quite as small as a penny board, but has a similar form factor and is much smaller than most other electric skateboards out there. Acton’s penny board style electric skateboard has a solid build quality, decent range (5 miles) and speed (10 mph), and a great price (~$250-300). It has a small, easy to use remote, and one of the better iOS / Android apps available. If you are looking for an electric penny board, the Acton Blink Lite is a great place to start.
The BenchWheel Penny Board is another option if you are looking for an electric penny board. It is a bit larger and heavier than the Acton Blink Lite, and with a similar sized motor it ends up being a bit slower as well. Still, it has a decent build quality, easily replaceable or upgradable hardware, and one of the best / easiest remotes to use of any electric skateboard we’ve tested.
The BenchWheel Penny Board is a bit more expensive than the Acton Blink Lite – about $100 more. So why would we recommend this board, that is both more expensive and not quite as good? Well BenchWheel’s electric penny board is also really easy to upgrade. If you are interested in having a board that you really work on and upgrade over time, the the BenchWheel Penny Board is a great option.
Build Your Own – DIY Electric Penny Board
Building your own electric penny board is also an option. This will take a lot more work, obviously, but can be a fun project. There is a ton of information out there, but here are a couple of the best tutorials we found:
Building your own electric skateboard lets you customize every aspect. You can try to put together a really cheap board that you can upgrade over time, or you can get some of the best parts on the market and build a real monster of a board. The BenchWheel electric penny board is a great option if you want to upgrade a board over time, but if you want complete control over every aspect of the board then you might be better off starting from scratch.
Other Electric Penny Board Options
There are definitely other electric penny board options, but these are the only one’s we’d recommend. The rest of the options out there are either too expensive for the quality of the hardware or are unreliable. Like too many electric skateboard projects out there, there are even a few being offered that took preorders but have been delayed. There are enough electric skateboard companies that have built a name for themselves that we recommend sticking with the electric penny boards we recommended above.
